Nobody likes to get a random request to come to the boss' office. Why? Because there's almost never good news on the other side of that request. But if you want to use that to your advantage as a leader, ask one of your team members to stop by your office. Have their leader in the room. Close the door. Then spend the next ten minutes telling your team member how valuable their work is, how their work ethic and good attitude stick out and how they are raising the bar for the whole team. Have their leader chime in and add to what you say. The slight discomfort of them coming to your office will be replaced by waves of positive emotions. There may be tears. Most people have never been privately and personally recognized and appreciated by their leader. It will be a moment they will not soon forget and your influence as their leader will ratchet up to a new level.
