STOP The Meeting!

building team unity recognition retention Sep 29, 2023
stop meeting in progress

It's mid-week and you're about to start a team meeting when one of your leaders very casually mentions they finally bought that truck they've been thinking about for two years.  STOP!  Don't miss this!  They've been wrestling with this decision for two years and they finally pulled the trigger...this is BIG.  Unless your meeting is *unusually time sensitive and critical, STOP what you were about to do and march the whole group out into the parking lot to see this truck first hand.  Sit in it.  Start it up.  Ask questions about it.  BRAG on it.  And ten minutes later, go back and finish that meeting.  (*unusally means it simply cannot wait which is about 3% of the time.  In this case, go after the meeting or sometime that same day.  This is designed to be disruptive to your routine btw...it's part of the magic.)

You just dropped a bomb of leadership, encouragement, humanity and personality into the middle of a normal workday.  This truck was way more than a purchase.  It was an accomplishment.  It was the most important new thing in your leader's week.  And you just publicly told everyone that it was more important than whatever is was you had planned.  Your team member will remember it forever and your team will feel more connected to you as a person than just as their leader.

Recognize any big moment in the life of your team.  Plan a field trip and take a carload of leaders to see a new house under construction, new land, etc.  Schedule extra time and stop at Starbucks on the way.  It's these moments that you stay personally connected to your team, show them you are proud of them, and remind them that you are as interested in their personal lives as you are in their professional lives.
